Puppets that Talk

The magic of stop motion is that it breathes life into inanimate objects. It is essential to fit the puppet’s movement with the audio perfectly to achieve that feeling, so ‘lip sync’ is a big challenge for animators.

In Clay Kids, each puppet has a set of dozens of mouths. Each one represents phonemes or concrete expressions such as sadness, anger, joy, surprise, etc

Besides the shape, the placement of the mouth is also very important. A small change in position can change the puppet’s expression. In any case, the animator must be very precise so that the puppet conveys exactly what we want to convey.

In this business, everything is a matter of millimetres.
